The Quality-by-Design (QbD) is “a systematic approach to development that begins with predefined objectives and emphasizes product and process understanding and process control, based on sound science and quality risk management. (ICH Q8(R))” For control theorists, one way of formulating this approach is to consider characterizing the set of allowable real parameter uncertainties for the output of a system to be located in a prespecified target range; such a problem can be solved by using a concept of robust control. This talk will first present the concept of the QbD, which is followed by a mathematical formulation as a control problem.
